"Big play man.'
That's just about the highest praise a coach can give a player.
. And that's Poca coach Don Jennings' description of Steve Hill, the
Dots' free safety-split end-placekicker.
"He's our big play man,' Jennings acknowledged as the 4-5 Dots
prepared for tonight's invasion by the 2-7 Nitro Wildcats at 7:30.
"Steve has been a good player on both sides of the ball. He is
an excellent free safety with good speed. He's our fastest _ 4.6 in
the 40.'
The senior also has good size. He's 6-3 and weighs 183 pounds
"Steve runs well, reacts well to the ball,' Jennings said.
"He's just a good athlete.'
As a split end, Hill has caught 26 passes. He has accounted for
25 points on three touchdowns, four extra points and a field goal.
Jennings said he thought Hill would be a split end in college
. Kentucky, Marshall and Memphis State are schools talking to Hill
"Steve can run, he runs good patterns and he catches the
ball,' Jennings said.
Against Nitro, the Dots may need all of Hill's abilities.
"I don't like the look of the weather,' said Jennings of the
rain. "Nitro is a lot bigger than we are.'
Jennings saw a similarity in the teams' seasons.
"I've talked to Pat (Nitro coach Pat Vance) several times
during the season and they have played just as we've played _ just
-
well enough to lose. They've stayed in most of their games, moved
the football, but failed to score enough points because of mistakes
.'
Also in Putnam County tonight, Class AA playoff-bound Winfield,
the defending champion, tries to clinch a home field advantage when
it takes an 8-1 record against visiting Big Creek (3-6). Buffalo.
tries for a 7-3 record when it hosts Crum and Hurricane (1-8) goes to
Milton (3-6)
