The possibility of Nitro not playing its football season opener
looms larger each day.
The Wildcats do not have a trainer, and Coach Pat Vance is
worried about the liability of such a situation.
"We have not been able to find a trainer this year,' said the
veteran coach, who is scheduled to send the Wildcats against
Stonewall at Laidley Field on Friday night. "I called the
activities commission (Secondary School Activities Commission) to see
if they would allow us to play. They said it was not their rule,
but a state rule. I called the State Department of Education and
they said they would get back to me. But they haven't yet.
"The rules are that the trainer must be an employee of the
school board, but I think we could get a waiver on that in this
situation.'
Vance fears that if a Nitro player were injured that the coach
would be held responsible by the parents, and might be sued.
"I think my job would be on the line if we played without a
trainer,' Vance said. "I have a family to protect, too.'
Vance said that anyone who might be able to help the Wildcats
should call Nitro High School (755-4321) or contact the coach at home
(755-3875) or Underwood Field (722-3745).
