Nitro High will be able to play its football opener tonight
despite the fact it does not have a trainer, Nitro Principal Paul
McClanahan said Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcats' 7:30 opener against Stonewall Jackson at Laidley
Field was put in jeopardy because Nitro Coach Pat Vance was concerned
about the liability of not having a trainer. The school has not had
a trainer since Bernie Carney resigned last spring and took an
assistant football coaching position with the Wildcats.
"We've asked the state for a waiver (of the rule stating a team
must have a trainer),' McClanahan said. McClanahan said the job has
been advertised, but the school has had no takers. Carney will serve
as the trainer at the games when those services are required,
McClanahan said.
