Since opening with a 35-0 loss to Class AAA defending champion
Stonewall Jackson, the Nitro Wildcats have averaged 22 points per
game and won two of three contests.
The second win came on the road on Friday night when the
Wildcats trimmed the Herbert Hoover Huskies 27-6.
Nitro took a 13-0 halftime lead on one-yard runs by quarterback
Scott Dixon and fullback Bret Caldwell.
Hoover moved to within 13-6 in the third quarter when sophomore
Joey McQuaine passed three yards to senior Jay Coleman for a
touchdown.
Nitro wrapped it up in the fourth quarter when O. J. Estep raced
27 yards for a touchdown and Dixon passed to Matt McNeel on a 30-yard
scoring play. It was Dixon's third touchdown pass of the season.
Nitro has won six of eight games against Hoover in the 1980s.
Hoover leads the series 8-7. The Wildcats, 2-2 this season, go to
South Charleston, which won its first game last night, next Friday
Hoover, 0-3, hosts East Bank on Friday.
