Nitro scored its first Kanawha Valley Conference victory of the
season and raised its record to 3-5 with a 7-0 win over visiting
DuPont in high school football on Friday night.
The game's only score came with 8:15 to play when Steve White
connected with Patrick Coles on a 20-yard pass play. It ended a
60-yard drive.
DuPont followed with a drive inside Nitro's 10, but was stopped
by the Wildcats' defense. On DuPont's final offensive opportunity,
Eric White intercepted a pass.
Pete Hinton had nine tackles, including two sacks, to pace
Nitro's defense. Phil Archibald added seven tackles as DuPont
managed only 26 rushing yards. The Panthers have scored only 21
points in their last five games.
Donnie Withrow rushed 12 times for 121 yards for Nitro,
which
plays at
1-7, goes to Laidley to take on the undefeated
Capital Cougars.
Sissonville 20,Winfield 14
Sissonville broke Winfield's three-game winning streak, but had
to go 103 yards to do it.
The Generals had a 14-0 lead and had marched to Sissonville's
25-yard linewhen Mike McClanahan intercepted a pass
three yards deep
in the end zone and returned it 103 yards for a touchdown with only
23 seconds left in the first half.
Chad Carpenter passed to Joe Childress on a 14-yard play to make
h
it 14-14 and Carpenter ended a 43-yard drive with 6:37 to go with a
two-yard plunge for the winning score.
Bill Young intercepted a pass to kill Winfield's comeback
attempt.
Winfield's scores came on a 54-yard run by Joe Mullins and a.
12-yard pass from Carey Crouch to Jared Turner, who had intercepted a
pass to set up the drive.
Mullins carried 16 times for 109 yards for 4-4 Winfield.
Sissonville, now 2-6, got 65 yards on 12 carries from Donnell Oxley
and 63 on nine from Chad Snyder.
Crouch was 8 of 25 for 117 yards and Carpente r7 of
15
for 57. Total yardage favored Winfield 248-214.The win
gave
Sissonville its first triumph over Winfield in the 1980s. It
had
lost eight in a row and been outscored 201-25 over the eight games
and 102-0 over the last four.
Sissonville hosts Scott next Friday when Winfield will be home
against Poca.

Defense paced Scott of Madison to a 19-0 win over visiting
pass interceptions for touchdowns.
Scott also scored on a one-yard run by Shane Griffith as the
Skyhawks boosted their record to 5-4.
Dave Rowe ran for 77 yards on 16 rushes for Scott.
The Skyhawks end their season at Sissonville on
