Nitro's Wildcats outlasted Poca's visiting Dots 2-0 in a
defensive struggle at Underwood Field in Nitro.
The Wildcat's finished the season on an upbeat tone, evening
their record at 5-5 with three consecutive shutouts.
The Nitro score came with 11 seconds left in the third quarter
as the Wildcats' Chad Dicken knocked the ball loose from Poca
quarterback Jeff Watts at the Poca 6. The ball squirted through the
end zone for a safety and the Wildcat margin of victory.
Poca penetrated to the Nitro 25 with five seconds left in the
game and elected to go for a field goal, which was short by inches,
assuring Nitro a non-losing record.
Derek Courtney, who missed the second half with an injury, led
Poca rushers with 55 yards. Bub Smith had 47 yards for the Dots.
Nitro's Skeeter Shamblin led all rushers with 78 of his team's
93 net yard
. He accounted for 71 of those in the first half as
Poca's stiff defense held the Wildcats at bay with only 13 net
rushing yards the second half.
Nitro's deepest penetration was to the Poca 8 in the second half
. The drive ended on a fumble recovery by Poca's Ryan Bailey.
An apparent 80-yard touchdown by Poca's Watts was nullified by a
penalty.
Poca lost for the eighth straight time, and finished 2-8.
