NITRO_ They're usually a bulky bunch without much speed. But
this season you should see a different Nitro team.
The Wildcats, under fourth year head coach Greg Cyrus, have some
guys who can run.
"We'll run the option and try to get it outside a lot,' Cyrus
said. "We've pounded it inside the last few years. We're going to
try and go outside this year and sneak it inside once in a while.'
Most of Nitro's speed will come from three guys _ quarterback
Joey Javins (6 0, 175 Sr.), tailback Chuck Richmond (5 11, 160 Sr.)
and wingback Dwight Patton (5 9, 140 Sr.).
The trio was part of Nitro's state champion 4x400 relay team and
the Wildcats' 4x100 team, which finished fourth in the states.
RAlso returning for the Wildcats on offense are fullback Tris
Cavender (5 8, 165 Sr.), tackle Craig Brown (6 0, 225 Sr.) and
receivers Travis Arey (6 0, 175 Sr.) and Greg Sigman (5 7, 140 Sr.)
The offensive line will consist of Kevin Kemerer (6 1, 205 Sr
.), Lance Nichols (6 0, 199 Sr.), Mark Coleman (6 1, 195 Sr.), Jay
McClanahan (5 10, 220 Sr.), Brian Lucas (5 9, 180 Sr.) and Rob Jones
(5 9, 180 Sr.). Tight ends include Teddy Queen (6 2, 190 Sr.) and
Mike Higgenbothem (6 1, 205 Jr.).
Javins, at free safety, is the only returner on defense.
Expected to play on the line are Jones, Nichols and Josh Bailey
(5 9, 170 Jr.); at the ends Brown, Kemerer, and Mark Coleman (6 1,
195 Sr.); at linebacker Higgenbothem, Queen, Cavender and Greg
Gilliam (5 9, 165 Jr.) and in the secondary Javins, Patton, Richmond,
Arey, Chris Braley (5 10, 145 Jr.) and Jeff Boggs (5 11, 170 Jr.).
