First came the New York Jets' dramatic victory over the
Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Then there was the U.S. hockey
team's stunning Olympic victory over the Soviets in 1980. Now it's
Poca's unexpected victory over county-line rival Nitro?
Does it compare? Probably "not!' But one would have a hard
time convincing the horde of screaming Poca fans of that last night
as they watched the Dots shut out the Wildcats 18-0.
Leading the way for the Dots was senior back Jayson Young who
had a 36-yard touchdown reception, a 17-yard TD run and a catch for a
two-point conversion.
The Dots set the pace early on with Young's TD reception from
quarterback Dallas Dunn followed by Tony Morris' successful extra
point attempt only five and one-half minutes into the first quarter
Nitro looked ready to retaliate. However, a fumble six plays
into its opening drive left Poca in good field position and
eventually led to a Morris 28-yard field goal which put Poca on top
10-0 at the end of the quarter.
Nitro didn't fair any better in the second quarter as
quarterback Joe Javins was intercepted once and sacked for a 10-yard
loss during which he re-injured a knee sprain.
Javins returned for the second half, but to no avail. Nitro
continued to sputter.
"They did a lot of stunting which gave us problems and we
couldn't seem to get into our passing game,' said Nitro head coach
Greg Cyrus.
"I think we may have underestimated them. Tonight it was their
Super Bowl.'
Poca head coach Bob Lemley's reply? "I'm tickled to death.'
"We had good practice all week and we were ready to play. We
wanted to contain Javins.'
Young scored his second TD on a 17-yard run in the third
quarter, followed by a two-point conversion catch.
Although the Dots didn't score again, they didn't need to
because their defense was doing a good job.
"We made some good tackles and we worked in a lot of
substitutes on defense to keep fresh people in,' said Lemley.
"They kept us running inside instead of outside like we like to
do,' added Nitro's Greg Cyrus. "I thought our defense played OK,
but our offense just wasn't there tonight.'
Poca's Young finished with four catches for 72 yards. Freshman
defensive end Charlie Hartley also had a big night with a fumble
recovery and the sack which put Nitro's Javins out.
"Charlie's a good athlete and he's made an impact on our team
. He was a heck of a middle school player and he's carried that
over to his first year here,' said Lemley.
Cyrus added, "The score probably should have been 0-0. Needless
to say I'm disappointed. I imagine we'll have a good week of
practice going into next week.'
Poca, now 3-1, plays East Bank next week while Nitro, 2-2, hosts
South Charleston.
