Clark's mark

Defending Class AAA champion Nitro was unable to secure a playoff
berth this season, finishing two spots out in 18th, but the Wildcats
and senior receiver Jeff Clark did go out with a flourish.

In his final game at Nitro, Clark caught 29 passes for 413 yards and
five TDs in a 37-8 win over visiting Roane County. The catches and
yards were both state and national records.

"We were glad we were able to do something for him as a senior,' said
Nitro coach Robert "Little' Burdette. "He's been a leader for us. He
deserved a little something.'

Nitro wasn't the only defending champ to miss out on the postseason
this season. Weir, which edged DuPont for the Class AA title a year
ago, went from a perfect 14-0 record to a winless 0-10 - a first for a
West Virginia team.
