Tinsley staying at Nitro; no decision on coach

Scott Tinsley, the offensive coordinator for Nitro's football team, has decided to stay at his current position instead of joining former Wildcats coach Robert Burdette in South Carolina.

Tinsley, whose record-setting offense helped take Nitro to the 1998 Class AAA championship, had an offer to join Burdette in his new job as assistant coach at Waccamaw High School in Pauleys Island, SC.

"I met with them for three days," Tinsley said of Waccamaw school officials, "but I'm staying for several different reasons. One is that it's going to hard to pull away from our girls [basketball] team right now."

Tinsley and Burdette also coached Nitro's girls to the Class AAA state tournament each of the past two years and several starters are set to return.

Nitro has yet to name a replacement for Burdette, with football practice due to begin on Aug. 5. Principal Paul McClanahan said he would likely stay "in-house" for the hire. Tinsley would take the head coaching spot for this season only if it became necessary because of time constraints.
